Portfolio Task 1: The expanding world of engineers

In my opinions, I think the idea expressed by Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna in the article, The expanding world of engineers, is the most important idea to the engineering profession. This is because the ideas expressed in the article are not only significant to the engineers themselves, but also significant for other people.

For the engineers, by knowing the expanding scope of the working fields, they will be more prepared to develop themselves thoroughly through “their tertiary education which, through its curriculum design and pedagogical approach, trains the mind to systematically analyze complex sets of information and to apply systems thinking in designing solutions” (by Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, 2007). With these skills they have learnt and the way they have developed, they will definitely find a suitable job in any particular field without putting much effort, even in the totally unrelated financial field, upon graduation. In fact, there is an increasing trend for the engineering graduates working in the financial filed as they are able to analyze the information systematically, thoroughly and critically. This seems engineering is a combination of science and art. But it is really true.

For non-engineering people, I think this is the time for them to change their mindset in viewing engineers. In the past, people always treated engineers as low-class workers. This is because they often thought that engineers were those people who did dirty and tiring jobs, such as repairing the air-con and other house applicants. Therefore, repairing stuffs was the first thing that people described an engineer last time. However, nowadays, the engineers are no longer those non-significant people in the working field. Instead, people will gradually be proud of them. This is because the engineers are always those people who stand aside to analyze information thoroughly and accurately as pursuing accuracy is one of their characteristics. And they always feel satisfied in doing so. Moreover, there are many challenges waiting for engineers to tackle with the scientists as “scientists dream about doing great things while engineers do them” (James A. Michener).

In conclusion, in today’s world, engineers are no longer just engineers.

The two points Jin Gui brought up are very relevant in the field of engineering today.
I agree that engineers are able to take on a financial career without much difficulty of reaching the levels of other colleagues. After all, the working life is about tackling with new problems that seems to surface everyday and engineers are well-trained for this purpose.

Yes, there is not a very good view of an engineering career.
Many people believe engineers are lowly-paid with tons of work to do. However, as with other professions, such as doctor and lawyer, working long hours is inevitable. The misconception that engineers are lowly-paid probably derived from what Jin Gui has mentioned, that they are associated with technicians because engineers deal with the same (electronic) platform.

What you've said is true, engineers are playing a more and more important role in society. And the article by Prof Seeram has obviously elaborated this idea. As for your essay, it's very well organised I think, I can see your structure clearly, that I should learn from you:)But I found out that you do love writing things, that's a very good habit. However, I think it's better to pay some attention on word limit 'cause exceeding the word limit can also cause panelty.
BTW, I'm starting to wonder how come you didn't pass the QET, as your English seems quite good.

Do feel free to write in the blog. After all, this is a writing course but put it as a different posting so I will know which to assess.
